In brief — what matters most

1. Hungarian ancestor

Main requirement: you prove an unbroken line to an ancestor who was a Hungarian citizen (parent, grandparent, great-grandparent…). If the ancestor was born then on the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary — within Austria-Hungary, which for our region also includes Vojvodina — they are treated as a Hungarian citizen.

  • Chain of birth and marriage records from ancestor to you
  • Common case: ancestor born in Vojvodina while that area was still part of Hungary / Austria-Hungary, or in Bačka during the wartime period 1941–1945.
More detail below

2. Hungarian language

Second main requirement: consul interview in Hungarian (usually 10–20 min). Perfect fluency is not required — understanding and simple answers in formal register matter.

  • Short handwritten biography in Hungarian with the application
  • Formal address (Ön) — not informal tegezés
More detail below

3. Documents (overview)

The exact list depends on your consulate, but in practice: eredeti or hitelesített másolat, hiteles fordítás (sworn interpreter), plus ancestor extracts.

  • útlevél / személyi igazolvány + születési anyakönyvi kivonat
  • másolat, fordítás / hiteles fordítás — if not bilingual
  • Ancestor chain: születési / halotti / házassági anyakönyvi kivonat

What is simplified naturalization?

Since 2011, Hungary offers “egyszerűsített honosítás” — simplified naturalization for people who prove Hungarian origin or that an ancestor was a Hungarian citizen. You do not need to live in Hungary to apply.

Who can apply (by ancestry)?

You may apply if you prove that an ancestor (parent, grandparent, great-grandparent…) was a Hungarian citizen or that there is reasonable belief of Hungarian origin. The line must be unbroken — you must document the chain of births and marriages from the ancestor to yourself.

In practice it is often shown like this: the ancestor was born on the then territory of Hungary — in the Kingdom of Hungary within Austria-Hungary. For people from Serbia that most often means Vojvodina (then part of that state). Birth on that territory in the relevant period generally means the ancestor was a Hungarian citizen — which is why place and date of birth matter so much on extracts and archive records.

  • Typical case: ancestor born before the Trianon period (until around 1921) while the place was still in the Kingdom of Hungary / Austria-Hungary
  • Another common case: ancestor born in Bačka during Hungarian administration in World War II (roughly 1941–1945)
  • A separate route through marriage to a Hungarian citizen (usually 10 years of marriage, or 5 years if you have a child together) — not the ancestry route

Requirement: Hungarian language

You must demonstrate Hungarian language skills at the consul interview or with the competent authority. An official language certificate is not always required — they check that you understand questions and can answer simply, on your own, in Hungarian.

A short handwritten biography in Hungarian is submitted with the application. The submission process and interview are usually conducted in Hungarian.

The interview lasts 10 to 20 minutes. It is a conversation, not an exam — they do not expect perfect language, but that you understand the question and give a meaningful answer in formal register (önözés, not tegezés).

What the officer actually assesses

The Hungarian citizenship interview is a conversation, not an exam. The officer asks questions from familiar topics and you answer in Hungarian. Answers do not need to be long — two to four sentences per question are enough.

  • Understanding — did you grasp the question without repetition?
  • Ability to answer — can you form a sentence, even a simple one?
  • Formality — do you use önözés (formal you), not tegezés (informal you)?

Formal register — önözés

The entire conversation is conducted in formal register. Use Ön (formal you) instead of te (informal you) and verbs in the third person. Any informal address signals you are not prepared enough — this is the most common and serious mistake at the interview.

General conditions

  • No criminal record under Hungarian law and no pending criminal proceedings
  • Naturalization must not threaten Hungary’s public or national security
  • For minors (especially under 14) special rules apply: citizenship is often tied to a parent, and personal presence at submission may be required for the child too

Documents (overview)

The exact list depends on your case and consulate — always check the current list on the embassy / consulate site. Typically originals (eredeti) or certified copies (hitelesített másolat) with a certified Hungarian translation (hiteles fordítás) by a sworn interpreter are required, plus official forms.

Useful Hungarian terms: születési anyakönyvi kivonat (birth extract), halotti anyakönyvi kivonat (death extract), házassági anyakönyvi kivonat (marriage extract), fordítás / hiteles fordítás (translation / certified translation), másolat (copy), eredeti (original).

  • Your ID / passport (személyi igazolvány / útlevél) and a copy (másolat), plus születési anyakönyvi kivonat
  • If you are married: házassági anyakönyvi kivonat — often required even when your spouse is not applying
  • Ancestor chain: születési / házassági / halotti anyakönyvi kivonat + hiteles fordítás into Hungarian (sworn interpreter)
  • Proof ancestor was Hungarian / Hungarian citizen: old passport, ID, military book, school certificate, church or archive records
  • If you also apply for a child: the other parent’s consent / authorization; the child often must be present at submission
  • Short handwritten biography in Hungarian

How to get ancestor extracts (birth / death)

For the chain to your ancestor you need civil registry extracts: birth (MKR), often death (MKU), and if needed marriage (MKV) — from you to the ancestor you claim. Every family “step” must be documented.

In Serbia, extracts for more recent entries can be requested online via eUprava or in person at the registrar / municipality where the event was recorded. It is better to go in person — it is resolved faster and with fewer mistakes about the form type (domestic, bilingual, international). Older entries (especially ancestors) are sometimes not in the electronic register — then you go to an archive or the place that keeps the old registries.

If the extract is not bilingual in Hungarian, it is translated into Hungarian. Sworn court interpreters do the translation — it must be certified with a court interpreter’s stamp. A regular translator or “Google Translate” will not be accepted.

First and last names must match from you to the ancestor — not even one letter may be wrong. It is not essential that every paper has every detail complete, but names and surnames must match. If there was a name or surname change, there must be a document for it.

  • születési anyakönyvi kivonat — birth certificate extract (MKR)
  • halotti anyakönyvi kivonat — death certificate extract (MKU)
  • házassági anyakönyvi kivonat — marriage certificate extract (MKV)
  • fordítás / hiteles fordítás — translation / certified translation (sworn interpreter)
  • másolat / hitelesített másolat — copy / certified copy
  • eredeti — original
  • anyakönyv / anyakönyvi hivatal — civil registry / registrar

eUprava — eExtract from civil registries

Online request for birth, marriage or death extract. Still, it is better to go in person to the registrar — faster, clearer and fewer form mistakes.

Official forms — where to download

These are the forms the Belgrade embassy lists for egyszerűsített honosítás. “Adatlap 1” is not an official name — in practice there are two separate adatlap sheets (birth and marriage). Links go to the MFA and the embassy page; if one fails, use the other.

2. Form — Hungarian birth registration

Official name: “Adatlap honosításhoz kapcsolódó születés hazai anyakönyvezéshez”. Needed if you were born outside Hungary (almost everyone from Serbia).

3. Form — Hungarian marriage registration

Official name: “Adatlap honosításhoz kapcsolódó házasság hazai anyakönyvezéshez”. Needed if you are married, divorced or widowed and the marriage was abroad.

How to book an appointment (official portal)

It is important to go to the embassy or consulate closest to your city and country — that is the most practical place to book and submit. In practice you can also go to any other Hungarian consulate / embassy, but check the current rules and appointment options for that location.

For most consular matters in Belgrade, appointments are booked only online at konzinfoidopont.mfa.gov.hu. Forms are downloaded from konzinfo.mfa.gov.hu or the embassy page (section above) — not from the appointment portal. In Subotica, check the consulate website for current channels.

Besides booking, there is also Konzinfo Ügysegéd — online preparation of the application (forms and attachments). That does not replace the appointment or personal appearance: at the consulate you also show the QR code from the prepared application.

  • 1. Open the appointment portal and choose where you will submit — pick the nearest embassy / consulate (in Serbia e.g. Belgrade or Subotica). In practice you can also choose another place if slots are available.
  • 2. Choose the service type: egyszerűsített honosítás. The wrong type often means a new appointment.
  • 3. Enter details carefully (number of people = applicants, not companions).
  • 4. Pick a free slot — if none, check later; slots disappear quickly.
  • 5. Before confirming, check everything; keep the confirmation email and bring it.
  • 6. If you cannot come — cancel ASAP. Arrive 5–10 minutes early.

Process overview

  • 1. Collect documents and translations (often the longest part — months)
  • 2. Download forms (section above) and optionally prepare the application in Konzinfo Ügysegéd
  • 3. Book on konzinfoidopont.mfa.gov.hu — then personal submission and interview in Hungarian
  • 4. Processing in Hungary — can take months (officially often around 3 months, in practice longer)
  • 5. Presidential decision — invitation to take the oath (consulate or Budapest, within one year)
  • 6. Oath of citizenship — you become a citizen; then Hungarian passport and ID

Practical notes

Paid
  • Translations must be certified — usually sworn translator; check what your consulate requires
